An introduction to our club!
On 28th October, 2003, Morriston Hospital Swansea launched their new burns club – the Welsh Dragon Burns Club.
The club will be open to all children up to the age of 16 who are being treated or have been treated at the Swansea Hospitaland the former unit in Chepstow for burn injuries. The celebration was attended by the Deputy Lord Mayor of Swansea, the Deputy Mayor of Neath & Port Talbot, celebrities such as former Welsh rugby captain Scott Quinnell, the Swansea Fire Brigade, 100 children and their families and friends.
The event culminated in a magnificent afternoon tea and with the children releasing balloons in the glorious sunshine.
At the launch of the Welsh Dragon Burns Club, The Children's Fire & Burns Trust (CF&BT) presented an Award of Courage to Kimberly Daw. Kimberly was burned in a house fire at the age of 18 months, suffering 68% burns to her body. Now aged 15, Kimberly has undergone 110 operations. The Award was accompanied by a personal note from HRH Prince Michael of Kent and signed photographs of pop star Gareth Gates, and CF&BT patron Amanda Redman.
Since the launch of the club we have established two annual camps one in the spring which is an activities based camp at the Morfa Bay Activity Centre, Pendine and another later on in the year which is holiday camp based this years was at Centre Parc Longleat.
We have also run Family and day trips to St Fagans and Longleat.
2006 saw a number of the group attend the World Burns Jamboree in South Africa.
The club is open to any child up to the age of 16 that has been treated for burn injuries at the specialist burns unit at Morriston Hospital, Swansea or the former burns unit at Chepstow.
